Director, IT Operations Services Delivery

Job Introduction

Director of IT Operations Services is heavily involved in the areas of development, operations and strategy.  The Director works to address the organization’s toughest technical problems as well as drives technical excellence at all levels, working with senior management to support execution of the organization's vision. IT Operations Services interfaces between the Dev team and the systems/server maintenance/hosting teams, to understand technology at both the infrastructure level and at the software development level, understands where the gaps often are between these two, and fills the gaps by taking proactive steps to prevent application/system emergencies. The IT Operations Services Director manages service delivery, systems reliability and scalability including reporting, configuration and build, testing, planning, and deployment of solutions and is accountable for all aspects of deployment and technical operations including technical project resources (partners/subcontractors or staff), scheduling, risk management, internal and external communications, status reporting, and resource management (internal and partners).  

Role Responsibility

• Apply experience of DevOps/Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) best practices to enable highly available & reliable systems and processes

• Assigns and monitors work of technical personnel, ensuring that application development and deployment is done in the best possible way, and implements quality control and review systems throughout the development and deployment processes

• Automate system scalability and continually work to improve system resiliency, performance and efficiency

• Build a short-term and long-term transformation plan based on the assessment results

• Build out and maintain a suitable tracking dashboards and metrics.

• Coach and mentor cross-functional teams on Agile and DevOps practices and principles

• Collaborate with developers to establish and ensure new environments meet requirements and conform to best practices

• Collaborate with the Modern Delivery team on business development activities, including identification, proposal development, and other pursuit activities

• Develop automated practices and recommend improvements

• Develop automation framework for software version migration that is integrated into a centralized infrastructure

• Develop, build, configure, deploy, and support IT solutions for automation related to environment management, deployment, and operations

• Displays technical leadership and oversight of implementation and deployment planning, system integration, ongoing data validation processes, quality assurance, delivery, operations, and sustainability of technical solutions

• Engage in and improve the software development lifecycle - from inception and design, through development, deployment, operation and refinement

• Engage with leadership to continuously improve the Modern Delivery services and build capabilities for the engagements

• Evaluates technological choices (network/hardware related and technology/code related) by querying providers and providing evaluations of each solution include ROI evaluations in the present and future implications, limitations, and opportunities

• Identifies technical and process improvement opportunities and socialize/advocate to get them implemented

• Identifies trending gaps or issues in day-to-day performance of applications and components hosted by third party vendors including by active monitoring, alert management, reporting, and process reviews

• Influence and design infrastructure, architecture, standards and methods for large-scale systems

• Is responsible for complex technical management coordination with multiple vendors and staff

• Is responsible for the development of standards and processes for operations that proactively prevent problems from occurring

• Lead and manage the engagement plan and develop the deliverables for the Clients as outlined in the engagement contract

• Leverage the right tools to address the gaps and build IT architecture capabilities

• Maintains accurate program estimates, timelines, project plans, and status reports

• Maintains issue tracking and documentation systems and provides reporting that ensures proper tracking and visibility of issues and projects

• Manages analysis and approval of new code through security and performance gates that you will design and develop for feature-complete software. Be an advocate for security and performance standards in the organization

• Perform comprehensive assessment of the current state and work with cross-functional teams to deliver transformative recommendations to adopt Agile and DevOps practices

• Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of developers, product owners, and subject matter experts • Exercises broadly delegated authority for planning, directing, coordinating, administering, and executing both routine and complex technical elements of technical operations

• Possesses expert technical understanding of the intersection of development and operations (DevOps), monitoring and management tools, and deployment processes and tools

• Possesses high level understanding in the areas of web application programming, content management systems, API, databases, and system design

• Practice sustainable incident response as part of an on-call rotation and through blameless postmortems

• Provide day-to-day support to manage development tools, code repositories and utilities

• Provide server support during various operations such as deployment and general application operations

• Provides process improvement recommendations based on best practices and industry standards

• Remediate tasks within corrective action plan via sustainable, preventative, and automated measures whenever possible

• Resolves conflicts by demonstrating leadership and appropriate decision-making competencies

• Responsible for collaborating with teams to build code, manage issues, and successfully deploy the software. Assist engineers in managing version control branches/tags

• Responsible for the framework that provides the facility for Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment for multiple initiatives

• Support and improve our tools for continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD). You can demonstrate measurable improvements in our delivery pipelines

• Support services prior to production via infrastructure design, software platform development, load testing, capacity planning and launch reviews

• Work closely with stakeholders to optimize builds, tests, and deployment workflows

• Work to continuously improve speed, efficiency and scalability of the build and test systems

The Ideal Candidate

• 5-7+ years of DevOps Manager or related experience with gradually increasing responsibilities and a demonstrated understanding of DevOps and technical quality control processes, artifacts and tools

• A minimum of five years of experience in Software Development and information technology

• A minimum of three years of experience driving the adoption of and achieving successful Agile and DevOps practices across organizations and a minimum of one year of hands-on experience in a Technical Agile Coach role

• A passion for automation with a desire to eliminate toil whenever possible

• A track record as a coach, mentor, and developer of talent

• An ability to drive to big picture goals and milestones while valuing and maintaining a strong attention to detail

• An ability to quickly identify and drive to the optimal solution when presented with a series of constraints

• Demonstrated ability in people management, strategic planning, risk management, change management, and project management

• Excellent judgment, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills

• Experience building software or maintaining systems in a highly secure, regulated or compliant industry

• Experience in monitoring infrastructure and application uptime and availability to ensure functional and performance objectives.

• Experience in planning, creating, implementing and maintaining a scaleable software development infrastructure

• Experience in professional services consulting delivering large transformation services and experience DevOps leadership and IT Operations transformation with custom solutions

• Experience with agile planning, deployment, integration, test/validation, and configuration custom software across multiple DevOps tooling platforms

• Experience with cloud automation/provisioning and configuration management tools using Terraform, Ansible, Cloud Formation, Chef, Puppet, Docker or Salt and experience with Containerization Tools such as Docker and Kubernetes

• Experience with configuration management tools (Puppet, Ansible, Chef, or similar) and experience in automation by scripting in Bash, PowerShell, Perl, Ruby, JavaScript, and Python

• Experience with development languages such as Java, C/C++, Python, PHP, or .Net

• Experience working with quality management approaches, techniques, and principles

• Expertise designing, analyzing and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems.

• Full understanding of software development lifecycle best practices

• Knowledge of Development, Build, and CICD tools such as Git, GitHub, Jenkins

• Proficiency with continuous integration and continuous delivery tooling and practices

• Self-motivated individual that possesses excellent time management and organizational skills

• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills

• Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, relationship building skills, and ability to achieve results without direct reporting relationships

• Strong practical administration skills in Cloud and Virtualized environment (GCP, AWS, Azure, VMware, etc.) and experience in cloud management technologies, specifically with the GCP, AWS, Azure and OpenShift

• Strong sense of personal responsibility and accountability for delivering high quality work, both personally and at a team level.

• Systematic problem-solving approach, coupled with strong communication skills and a sense of ownership and drive

 

Technical Skills:

• Build Tools: Azure DevOps, TFS RM

• Cloud Platforms: AWS, Azure infrastructure

• Collaborate with and educate engineers on proper use of build and source control systems

• Config Management Tools: Ansible, Salt

• Experience with Automation for build, test, configuration, and deployment in complex environments from development to production

• Experience with database DevOps tools Liquibase or Redgate

• Experience with DevOps toolchains Azure DevOps Jenkins

• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes

• Experience with implementing CI CD concepts and orchestration pipeline

• Experience with integration to test automation tools Tosca

• Experience with SCM and branching strategies

• Experience with TFS, JIRA and Confluence

• Experience working in Agile environments

• Familiarity with agile development processes

• IAC templates: ARM templates, cloud formation templates, Terraform

• Knowledge of Cyber security requirements

• Knowledge of T SQL and SQL packages

• Scanning software: Nexus, SonarQube, Fortify, etc.

• Scripting Languages: Powershell, Bash, Python
